Plato’s “Republic”, “The excess of liberty, whether in States or individuals, seems only to pass into excess of slavery.”
Hobbes “Leviathan”, “And it is called deliberation; because it is a putting an end to the liberty we had of doing, or omitting, according to our own appetite, or aversion.”
Every liberation movement in history has flirted with the excess of Liberty. Liberty is excessive when it claims as a right something which is abusive of others. It follows that since the liberation movements of the 20th Century have been in existence for several decades that in various areas what they are claiming as rights are in fact a license to abuse others. This is not an attack, it is an historical inevitability. It does not mean that every legitimate goal of such movements has been achieved. It simply means that not everything they believe is legitimate is truly a legitimate right or freedom. This book must, being written at this point in history, address the faults not the virtues in these movements.
